Rwina with Butter and Honey

The Algerian Rwina with butter and Honey is called Zrira and may have other names. It is a dessert usually prepared for the celebration of the the prophet Mohamedโ€™s birthday (or Al Mawlid Anabawi  Acharif) in the Algerian culture. It is also prepared for the mothers who had babies and it is served to their guests for the same occasion.

Zrira requires 3 basic ingredients such as 1 measurement Rwina flour, 1/2 measurement butter, 1/2 measurement honey ( or less) but you can always reduce or add any of the ingredients. If you donโ€™t like this dish too sweet, then reduce the amount of honey.
I previously shared the Rwina flour recipe, please check recipe here: https://www.myexcellentdegustations.com/%f0%9f%87%a9%f0%9f%87%bf-whole-wheat-chickpea-and-lentil-flour-rwina/
The decoration is optional, it can be cinnamon, nuts, m&ms, and you name it.

Ingredients

  • About 1 cup Rwina flour ( more or less), please see Rwina recipe link above
  • 1/2 cup butter at room temperature
  • 1/2 cup honey (or less)

Garnish (optional)

  • Cinnamon, candies, nuts, etc

Instructions

  1. Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium low heat.

  2. Remove from heat and add honey.

  3. Mix well the butter and honey with a wooden spoon or spatula

  4. Add Rwina flour gradually until you get the right consistency (not too runny and not too dry). Note that if you donโ€™t consume this dish right away, you should make it runny because the Rwina flour will absorb the liquid.

  5. Place in a serving dish.

  6. You can consume it as is or garnish it with whatever you like, such as with nuts, candies, etc.

Recipe Notes

  • It is very important to take your time and mix the Rwina flour with butter and honey. This will prevent the butter to come to the surface of the Zrira.
  • Itโ€™s preferable to prepare this dessert last minutes before serving (about half an hour or less) to keep it soft.
  • Zrira may tend to harden, just turn on the oven for few minutes, then turn it off and place the oven safe dish with Zrira in the oven to warm it up.
  • You can also serve Zrira in small dishes and if the Zrira is hardened, just place it in microwave for few seconds.

๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ฟ Rwina with Milk – Basic Healthy Recipe

Rwina is the flour that is basically made of roasted whole wheat. So many other roasted ingredients can be added to the whole wheat to make the flour richer. I already shared a recipe of Rwina flour made of roasted whole wheat, chickpea and lentils (please check recipe here https://www.myexcellentdegustations.com/%f0%9f%87%a9%f0%9f%87%bf-whole-wheat-chickpea-and-lentil-flour-rwina/).

Algerians make Rwina flour ahead of time and keep it in the pantry for future use. Itโ€™s is a very rich and healthy flour that can be used in so many recipes. I already shared a very basic recipe of Rwina with water https://www.myexcellentdegustations.com/%f0%9f%87%a9%f0%9f%87%bf-rwina-with-water-basic-recipe/.

I am sharing today another basic recipe of Rwina with milk. This dish can be served for breakfast or any time of the day. It is very healthy especially for people who have health issues such us osteoporosis and itโ€™s great to serve it for picky eaters ( children).

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Rwina flour( please check the link above for recipe)
  • 1 tsp granulated sugar or more if you like
  • 1/2 cup warm milk (more or less)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, put Rwina flour.

  2. Add granulated sugar. You can add more than 1 teaspoon if you like it too sweet.

  3. Mix well with a spoon or a spatula.

  4. Add milk gradually and mix until you obtain the consistency that you like. The Rwina flour absorbs the liquid, so I like to make it a little runny.

  5. Enjoy.

Recipe Notes

  • I used 1/2 cup warm milk in this recipe but it depends of your Rwina flour, you may need to add more or less milk.
  • This is the very basic Algerian recipe, you can always add other ingredients that you may like.
